The Imo State Police Command has arrested a secondary school teacher, Blessing Emmanuel, for allegedly subjecting her 12-year-old stepdaughter, Amarachi Emmanuel, to horrific physical abuse. On Tuesday, the arrest came after Owerri-based activist journalist Chidiebube Okeoma filed a formal complaint at the Owerri Area Command headquarters.

The tragic condition of the young girl came to light when two women, Eunice and Amarachi, noticed her selling sachet water on the streets with visible injuries. Deeply concerned, they alerted Okeoma, who later uncovered the full extent of the abuse.
A viral video shared by Okeoma on social media captured the horrifying sight of the 12-year-old covered in bruises, scars, and machete cuts. The video sparked outrage across Nigeria, leading to Emmanuel’s swift arrest. Okeoma confirmed on Thursday that Amarachi had been rushed to Umuguma General Hospital in Owerri, where she is currently receiving urgent medical care for her severe injuries.
Okeoma revealed that Amarachi, who lost her mother in 2018, has been living with her stepmother, Blessing Emmanuel, since her father remarried in 2019. The stepmother allegedly forced Amarachi and her two siblings to drop out of school and spend their days hawking sachet water to make money for her. According to the young victim, they often went to bed hungry after long days on the streets.
“The latest beating occurred because Amarachi cooked rice and ate without her stepmother’s permission,” Okeoma said. The girl’s stepmother, in a fit of rage, allegedly used a machete to beat her, leaving her with deep cuts and burns on her body.
Okeoma’s swift intervention led to the teacher’s arrest, but his efforts didn’t stop there. He has since enrolled Amarachi in the Imo State Health Insurance Scheme for vulnerable children and is advocating for her welfare, rallying support from human rights groups, the National Human Rights Commission, and the Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs.
“Battering of children has no place in the 21st century. This woman turned Amarachi and her siblings into slaves, simply because their mother is no longer alive, and their father is medically unstable,” Okeoma said.
Okeoma’s efforts have garnered widespread attention, with human rights organizations and legal bodies like the Nigerian Bar Association stepping in to ensure that justice is served. The police have confirmed the ongoing investigation and assured the public that the case will be thoroughly pursued.
Imo State Police Command spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrest and stated that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has directed the investigators to take appropriate action.
“Once investigations are completed, the police will ensure that the victim gets the justice she deserves,” Okoye said.
Okeoma has vowed to secure better living conditions and education for Amarachi and her siblings, while also calling on compassionate Nigerians to step forward and help.
“Little Amarachi Emmanuel needs all of us now,” Okeoma said. “Let’s show her that humanity is not wicked.”
