The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved and released revised regulations and guidelines for recalling members of the National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly, and Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
At it’s meeting on Thursday, September 19, 2024, the Commission finalized preparations ahead of the upcoming Edo State Governorship election, scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.
Additionally, in a statement released on it’s official X handle, INEC noted that numerous requests have been made by various groups seeking to recall their representatives in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.
“The Commission has, in the last few weeks, received a number of requests from different groups across the country for the recall of their representatives in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly. Some of them have even requested the Commission to initiate the process of the recall on their behalf.”

INEC clarified that the recall process is initiated by voters in a constituency, with the Commission implementing the request in accordance with Sections 69, 110, and 160 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 2(c) and 113 of the Electoral Act, 2022.
Further, the revised regulations and guidelines provide a detailed procedure for recall, outlined in a 10-page document available on INEC's website and social media platforms. Constituents interested in recalling elected representatives are advised to follow these guidelines when preparing and submitting petitions.
“Accordingly, the Commission has reviewed the regulations and guidelines, providing a detailed procedure for recall. The 10-page document has been uploaded to our website and social media platforms for the guidance of prospective petitioners and for public information.
“We appeal to constituents interested in the recall of their elected representatives to be guided by the provisions of the regulations and guidelines in preparing and submitting their petitions to the Commission”.
The statement was signed by Sam Olumekun mni the National Commissioner & Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the provisions outlined in the regulations and guidelines.
This development comes as INEC prepares for the Edo State Governorship election, while also addressing the growing demand for recall processes across the country.
