Job Seekers Beware: Nigeria Immigration Service Sounds Alarm on Recruitment Scams

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a stark warning about a rising wave of fraudulent recruitment scams targeting desperate job seekers. In a statement released on September 25, 2024, the NIS reaffirmed its commitment to combatting these illegal schemes and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.

Deputy Comptroller of Immigration (DCI) Kenneth Udo, speaking on behalf of Comptroller General Kemi Nandap, expressed grave concern over the increasing sophistication of these scams. He urged the public to remain vigilant and to avoid falling victim to individuals promising quick employment opportunities with the NIS.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service maintains that all recruitment exercises are conducted transparently and based on merit,” Udo stated. He emphasized that legitimate job vacancies are advertised only through official channels, such as the NIS website, recognized national newspapers, and other government platforms. Any claims of recruitment through unofficial means are to be considered fraudulent.

The NIS has reported that scammers are employing various tactics, including sending unsolicited messages via social media, emails, and text messages, falsely claiming to represent the agency. Some fraudsters demand hefty sums from hopeful job seekers under the guise of processing fees, only to vanish after payment.

To tackle this troubling trend, the NIS is working closely with law enforcement agencies to track down and apprehend those behind these deceptive recruitment operations. Udo reassured Nigerians that the NIS is committed to maintaining high standards of integrity and professionalism in its recruitment processes.

In addition to direct action, the NIS is ramping up public awareness campaigns aimed at educating citizens on how to identify and avoid recruitment fraud. Udo advised anyone who encounters suspicious job offers to report them immediately to the nearest NIS office or law enforcement agency. “If you receive unsolicited messages or are approached by individuals claiming to represent the NIS, report them to us,” he added.

The NIS urges all job seekers to stay informed and only rely on official communication channels for recruitment updates. Your safety is paramount!
