Nigeria’s national electricity grid has suffered another collapse, leaving many parts of the country without power. The grid failure occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, significantly reducing power generation.
At 11 a.m., the total electricity supply stood at 4,064 megawatts. However, by noon, this had dropped to 1,203MW, and by 1 p.m., the grid recorded zero power generation.
An X account dedicated to tracking the national grid, @NationalGridNg, confirmed the incident, stating:
“There was a ‘GRID DISTURBANCE’ before noon today. Parts of the country experienced an outage. Further information shortly.”
The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company also acknowledged the system failure, reporting on X that the outage occurred at 11:34 a.m.
“Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 12th February 2025, at 11:34hrs, affecting all our feeders.
Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders.”
Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the situation, assuring customers that efforts were underway to restore power.
“Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 a.m. today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas.
While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilized. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to serve you better.”
This marks the first national grid collapse of 2025, following an incident in January that was attributed to line tripping.
