Just In: Port Harcourt Refinery Begins Crude Oil Processing

In a significant leap towards energy independence, the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) in Rivers State has officially resumed crude oil processing after years of setbacks and delays. This marks a new chapter in Nigeria's refining capacity, with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) confirming that truck loading has commenced, signaling the start of local fuel distribution from the plant.

The restart of PHRC's operations has been long-awaited. Following several delays and failed promises since late 2023, the refinery’s revival is now seen as a critical milestone in reducing Nigeria's reliance on imported petroleum products. The refinery, part of the country’s four major refineries with a total capacity of 445,000 barrels per day, has been plagued by inefficiency and poor performance for decades. Despite repeated investments and attempts to overhaul the facility, it had remained largely non-functional.

NNPCL's Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Femi Soneye, hailed the development as a monumental achievement for the country. "Today, we mark a groundbreaking milestone for Nigeria as the Port Harcourt Refinery officially begins processing crude oil. This achievement heralds a new era of energy independence and economic growth for our nation," Soneye said in a statement.

Soneye also extended congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NNPC Board, and Group CEO Mele Kyari, citing their relentless efforts in making this revival possible. "Together, we are reshaping Nigeria’s energy future," he added.

The activation of the PHRC refinery is expected to ease the nation's long-standing fuel supply challenges. As part of a broader strategy to boost local refining capacity, NNPCL also plans to revitalize the Warri Refinery in the near future.

With crude oil processing now underway, the hope is that this significant step will help Nigeria reduce its dependency on imported fuel, strengthen its energy sector, and drive long-term economic growth. The successful resumption of the Port Harcourt Refining Company is seen as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s domestic oil production capabilities.
