The Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has officially named Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.
The announcement was issued in a statement on Friday 10th January 2024, by Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.
This appointment comes nearly two years after the death of the widely respected Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, whose April 2022 passing left a leadership void that triggered legal disputes and public debates over the throne’s rightful heir.
The new Alaafin’s appointment, following consultations with the Oyomesi (the council of kingmakers) and traditional divinations, was framed as a moment to heal divisions and usher in progress for the kingdom.
“The decision to appoint Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade closes the chapter of socio-legal controversies surrounding the succession,” Commissioner Oyelade stated.
