The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Victor Olaiya, has led a team of police officers to commiserate with the family of Quoyum Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic who was killed by police officers during a stop and search operation last week. The visit was to express condolences and assure the family that justice will be served.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Victor Olaiya psc(+) Kwara State Command assures the family that the command is committed to ensuring justice and transparency in this case”, the statement said.
Olaiya, representing the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, visited the family at their residence in Ilorin, the state capital. He expressed gratitude for their cooperation during the investigation and delivered the IGP's assurance that justice will be served.
“The IGP has directed the Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to take over the investigation, with all officers involved being transferred for a thorough and impartial inquiry,” the statement said.
Also, the family of the deceased, including his parents and clergy, expressed their appreciation for the police's continuous support and commitment to justice. They expressed hope that the ongoing investigation will lead to justice for their late child.
Speaking on behalf of the immediate family, Mr Muselim Abdulyekeen, the father of the deceased, alongside Mrs Ramat Abdulyekeen, the mother, expressed their appreciation to the Inspector General of Police and the Kwara State Police Command for their continuous support.
“They reiterated they are hopeful that the ongoing investigation will lead to justice for their late child. Alhaji Mohamed Kewugbemi, the family’s clergy, offered prayers and commended the police for their commitment to justice. Alhaji Erolalujana (Olori-Ebi) expressed his appreciation for the police’s support during this difficult time.”
The Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Engr. Abdul-Jimoh Mohammed, also accompanied the police team to show solidarity with the family. CP Olaiya assured the family that the command is committed to ensuring justice and transparency in the case.
The incident that led to Quoyum's death occurred during a stop and search operation by police officers at the Fate area of Ilorin. The officers allegedly shot and killed Quoyum, an ND 2 Electrical Electronics Engineering student of Kwara State Polytechnic.
The police commissioner's visit and assurance of justice demonstrate the police's commitment to accountability and transparency in the face of public outcry and demands for justice. The case has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for reform of the police force.
