The Rivers State Government's Flood Prevention and Management Committee, led by Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, delivered critical food items and palliative support to the flood-affected communities of Ndoni and Okwuzie in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA).
Speaking during an interaction with the flood victims in Ndoni, Prof. Odu emphasized that the distribution of relief materials was a direct response from Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, who, she said, “cares deeply about the suffering of the people and wanted to make sure that this intervention was personal.” She added that Governor Fubara’s leadership was driven by a deep sense of responsibility to improve the lives of the people, particularly in the face of such devastating natural disasters.
Prof. Odu further highlighted that the establishment of the Flood Prevention and Management Committee was not just an immediate response to the flooding crisis, but part of the State Government's broader strategy to address long-term environmental challenges. She noted that the Orashi Region, which includes ONELGA, has been plagued by annual floods, and the government was now actively exploring permanent solutions.
“We cannot continue to do the same thing year after year and expect different results,” Prof. Odu remarked. “We need to think strategically. Dredging the rivers and creeks could significantly reduce the water volume that overflows into homes and farmlands. This is a key recommendation we will be pushing forward to prevent these devastating floods in the future.”
The Deputy Governor’s comments were echoed by the Chairman of Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area, Hon. Prince Isaac Umejuru, who expressed his gratitude for the visit. He praised the proactive role of the state government in providing timely relief to the flood victims. “It is a great joy for us in ONELGA to see our daughter, the Deputy Governor, and her team on the ground with relief materials,” Umejuru said. “The Governor has always been responsive, and this visit is a clear indication of his commitment to improving the lives of our people, especially in times of crisis.”
One of the grateful beneficiaries, Mr. Friday Okpekere, shared his appreciation for the support, stating that the flood victims in the community had never witnessed such a swift and comprehensive relief effort in their history. “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the government. This is the first time we have received this kind of attention and support. We are truly grateful,” Okpekere said.
The Deputy Governor’s visit also included a courtesy call to the Palace of the Egbema Monarch, Nze Emerestus Amuda, where she assured the traditional ruler and the people of ONELGA that more support would be provided in the coming days, as the team plans to visit other parts of the local government area.
