Navy Provides Free Medical Care to1,000 Residents in Bayelsa

The Nigerian Navy Outpost (NOP) Koluama community in Bayelsa State on Thursday Dec 4, 2024 delivered free medical services to over 1,000 residents of Koluama II Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The display of the community engagement was an initiative, led by Commanding Officer Commander Stephen Agwai, which was aimed at strengthening ties with the host community while addressing pressing healthcare challenges.

Speaking at the event, Commander Agwai emphasized the Navy's commitment to fostering cooperation and improving the well-being of the local population. He described the outreach as part of the Navy's corporate social responsibility, acknowledging the community's support for the Navy's operations.

“The Nigerian Navy recognizes the pivotal role health plays in national development and individual well-being. Through initiatives like this, we aim to promote health awareness and foster partnerships with local healthcare providers for peaceful coexistence,” Agwai stated.

He outlined the services provided during the outreach, which included free medical checkups, consultations, health education, distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, and medications. Agwai further highlighted the importance of a healthy lifestyle, stressing the benefits of regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate rest.

“Our mission goes beyond the tangible provision of healthcare services,” he said. “Today, we share essential tips for healthy living and emphasize the significance of preventive measures like regular exercise and proper nutrition.

This initiative reflects the Navy’s dedication to the well-being of our host community and our nation.”

The outreach drew widespread appreciation from community leaders and residents. Chief Naigu Nitabi, Chairman of the Community Development Committee, Koluama I, expressed gratitude to the Navy for their consistent support and the positive impact of the medical intervention.

“The Nigerian Navy has always been kind to us. This gesture of addressing our healthcare needs is deeply appreciated,” Chief Nitabi said.

Residents like Mrs. Eunice Timipa, one of the beneficiaries, shared personal stories of relief and gratitude. “I was tested and given free medication for high blood pressure. This initiative has brought much-needed medical care to our community,” she remarked.

The programme showed the Navy's commitment to non-kinetic operations and civil-military relations, further solidifying its role in promoting community well-being and development in Bayelsa State.
