Petrol Tanker Explosion in Niger Claims 30 Lives, 50 Cows

Over 30 people have lost their lives in a petrol tanker explosion in the Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State.

It was learnt that the petrol tanker reportedly collided head-on with a trailer truck carrying travelers and cattle from Wudil, Kano State. The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba-Arab, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Baba-Arab stated that the incident occurred around 12:30 am on Sunday, along the Lapai-Agaie road, approximately 2km from Dendo Community in Agaie LGA.

The statement further said that over 50 cattle were also burnt alive, and two other vehicles—a crane truck and a pickup van — were caught in the fire.

The NSEMA statement read: “NSEMA has received a report of a deadly tanker explosion that occurred on Sunday, 8th September 2024, at about 12:30 am along Lapai-Agaie road, 2km from Dendo Community in Agaie LGA.

“The incident happened when a petrol tanker loaded with PMS collided with a trailer truck carrying travellers and cattle from Wudil, Kano State, heading to Lagos. Two other vehicles, a crane truck and a pickup van, were also involved in the incident.

“Over 30 people have already been confirmed dead, with more than 50 cattle burnt alive. NSEMA’s Rapid Response Team (RRT), in conjunction with LGEMCs, is still at the scene conducting search and rescue operations, as more bodies remain trapped inside the vehicles,” the statement read.

Tanker explosions have become imminent in Nigerian roads. Four vehicles and several houses were on Saturday burnt as petrol-loaded trucks caught fire along the Ibadan-Ife road.

It was learnt that the incident happened around the Ajia Circular Road end in Egbeda Local Government Area, causing a traffic standstill, resulting to motorists and commuters being stranded for several hours.

The devastating fire incident occurred at approximately 5:45 pm, involving four vehicles: a petrol tanker, an 18-seater bus, a medium-sized truck, and a Micra taxi.

According to Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the State Fire Services, the blaze resulted in significant property damage and displaced multiple families.

On June 4, 2024 Two persons were confirmed to have died when a tanker laden with Liquefied Natural Gas exploded into flames at the Obiri-Ikwerre flyover along the East-West at the outskirts of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

It was gathered that the tanker burst into inferno at about 9:25am when it fell while trying to negotiate the bypass at the flyover.

The ill-fated truck was said to have crushed a salon car with two occupants inside.
