In a significant ruling, the National Industrial Court in Ibadan has awarded Ilesanmi Temokun, a Nestle Nigeria PLC employee, N10 million in compensation.
Temokun was severely injured on September 4, 2021, when an iron locker fell on him at the company's premises. He suffered life-threatening harm and requires ongoing care.
The court found Nestle Nigeria PLC negligent and liable for the incident. Judge John Peters emphasized the company's responsibility for ensuring workplace safety.
Temokun's lawyer had sought N10 million in compensation and damages, while Nestle's lawyer argued the lawsuit lacked merit.
The court also awarded Temokun N500,000 in litigation costs. The judgment includes an annual interest rate of 20% until the compensation is fully paid.
The case has sparked interest in workplace safety regulations in Nigeria.
Will this ruling lead to changes in workplace safety protocols nationwide?
