Nigeria Loses $26bn Annually To Power Outages — Report

Report says Nigeria faces an estimated annual loss of $26 billion due to persistent power shortages.

According to a latest Africa Trade Barometer report by Standard Bank, emphasizes that this staggering figure excludes the additional $22 billion businesses spend annually on fuel for off-grid generators. The combined financial burden on the economy from both grid failures and the reliance on alternative power sources highlights the critical state of Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.

The report indicates that businesses in Nigeria are left with no choice but to invest heavily in off-grid power solutions, such as generators, to remain operational. This has driven up the cost of doing business in the country. Nigeria’s national grid frequently collapses under the strain of demand that far exceeds its capacity, with peak electricity demand reported to be nearly four times higher than what the grid is able to generate. The instability in power supply has become a significant hurdle for businesses across sectors.

Power infrastructure is identified as one of the biggest obstacles to business operations not only in Nigeria but across the African continent. The report surveyed ten African markets and found that electricity supply issues are consistently ranked among the most critical infrastructural challenges. In Nigeria, the issue is particularly severe, with blackouts causing a range of disruptions that include production downtimes, damage to perishable goods, and interruptions in services reliant on telecommunications and water supply.

The impact of these power failures extends beyond immediate financial losses. The lack of reliable electricity has cascading effects on economic productivity, business growth, and the overall investment climate in Nigeria. For businesses that depend on controlled environments, such as those in food production and healthcare, inconsistent power can lead to spoilage, compromised quality, and additional costs.

In recent weeks, the situation has been exacerbated by multiple national grid collapses. This month alone, the grid has failed three times within a seven-day period, plunging many regions of the country into darkness. The National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) attributed the most recent collapse to an explosion at the Jebba transmission station. The explosion triggered a cascade of shutdowns across multiple power plants, causing widespread outages.

In light of these recurring failures, the Nigerian House of Representatives has announced that it will launch a probe into the ongoing issues with the national grid. The investigation aims to address the root causes of the grid's frequent collapses and explore possible solutions to improve the country’s power infrastructure.
