NUJ Calls For Shorter Workdays in Abia Amid Hardship

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abia State is worried about the skyrocketing prices of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which is having a ripple effect on transportation and goods costs, ultimately leading to more hardship for residents.

The union is urging the Abia State Government to consider slashing the number of working days for civil servants, as many are shelling out a significant chunk of their salaries just to get to work.

This move could bring some relief to civil servants who are struggling to make ends meet. Recently, they expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for paying their June salaries on time ². However, the high cost of living, exacerbated by rising PMS prices, is taking a toll on their overall well-being.

The request was put forward at the NUJ State Secretariat in Umuahia during the Council's monthly meeting on Saturday

In a seven-point communiqué signed by Chairman of NUJ, Victor Ndukwe and Secretary, Ikechukwu Onuegbu, the Abia NUJ noted that reducing working hours, as implemented in some states, could alleviate the harsh economic conditions faced by civil servants.

The Union emphasized that the rising petrol prices are adversely impacting civil servants in the state, resulting in higher expenses and increased hardship for workers, further exacerbating their already difficult circumstances in Abia.

The Union which appreciated government for restoring free flow of traffic at Isi Gate Umuahia, called upon relevant authorities to strictly monitor the activities of some members of the taskforce who are allegedly extorting tricycle operators.

They journalists also highlighted that retirees from the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State (BCA), including some parastatals, have not yet received their pension payments.

“That Congress which observed that retirees from the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State (BCA) and a few other parastatals are yet to be paid their pension for almost one year even after been verified, and appealed Governor Alex Otti, to cause the immediate clearance of the said pensions arrears to enable the retirees to heave a sigh of relief in these austere time,” the communique said.

They also urged pensioners in the state, represented by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), to unite and speak with one voice rather than as separate factions.
