Abia LG Polls: Otti Backs Non-Labour Party Candidate

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced his decision to back candidates from a different political party in the upcoming November 2 local government elections in the state.

Governor Otti, who is Nigeria’s only Labour Party-elected governor, made this statement through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.

This follows a report suggesting that the governor is aligning with the Zenith Labour Party amid the ongoing crisis within the Labour Party.

Ekeoma acknowledged that the Labour Party in Abia State is facing internal conflicts, but emphasized that the candidates backed by the Governor, regardless of their political affiliation, will win in the upcoming elections.

He explained that primaries are internal party affairs regulated by electoral laws, and it’s the responsibility of party members to either participate or contest the results.

In response to accusations of unfair primary processes, he pointed out instances where stakeholders addressed concerns and settled disputes through discussions.

Ekeoma voiced confidence that the candidates supported by Governor Otti will secure victory in the November 2 local government elections, regardless of their party affiliation. He also reaffirmed loyalty to the Labour Party, dismissing any rumors of defection.

Recall that since the recognition of Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party by the Federal High Court in Abuja, the party’s internal crisis has been worse.

The party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, decided to drag Abure to the Appeal Court.

In a brief counterstatement issued in Abuja on Tuesday night, Senator Nenadi Usman, Chairman of the Labour Party Caretaker Committee, announced their intention to appeal the judgment.

The decision followed just hours after the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the disputed national convention, which reinstated him and his National Working Committee, was legitimate.

The court also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to acknowledge Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party. It ruled that the Nnewi convention, which took place in March, was constitutional and adhered to the established laws of the country.

Following the judgment, an enthusiastic Abure released a statement expressing his willingness to pursue reconciliation. He also urged Obi to assist in calming the party leaders and other dissatisfied members.
