The Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB has emphasized the need for schools to promptly comply with the September 23, 2024 resumption date by ensuring that teachers are ready to commence academic activities immediately.
Recall that the Abia State Executive Council had approved the postponement of school resumption from September 16 to September 23 due to the Muslim public holidays.
Speaking in an interaction forum with Newsmen in Umuahia, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Lydia Onuoha warned that defaulting schools would be severely punished and urged parents, guardians and school authorities to make their environment ready to welcome the new and returning pupils.
“To schools I emphasize the importance of complying with guidelines set by ASUBEB and strict adherence to these standards would ensure quality education and safe learning environment for our wards.
We expect that by now, teachers and LGEAs would have been pre-informed about the resumption dates, we also expect that LGAs would have at this point also informed the schools, head teachers, parents, guardians, community members about the date for resumption.
We also expect that LGAs would have discussed resumption plans with their staff and would have by now assigned schools and classes to each staff member. We expect that schools would have organized pre-resumption meetings with their teachers ensuring that teachers are prepared to start off immediately. We expect that teaching and learning starts on the same day of resumption.”
The ASUBEB boss warned schools against using children to clear bushes.
“I also urge all schools to ensure that the school environment is cleared come Monday, September 23, 2024. I also want to appeal to schools to desist from using children to clear bushes in the school. We have agreed that schools should make arrangements to engage the services of those that will help out with the clearing of their bushes in and around the school premises".
She announced that the board would be on random inspection visits to schools and Local Government Education Authorities to ascertain the level of compliance with the directive.
“It is important to also announce that ASUBEB and its team would be visiting LGAs and schools to ascertain, the level of compliance to the guidelines already agreed.
"Education remains the top priority for the administration of Governor Alex Otti who has worked tirelessly to improve infrastructural facilities in our schools including teachers training and the provision of educational resources for our schools.
"I implore all of us to work together to provide our children with the best possible starts in ensuring that we all resume on Monday September 23rd 2024,” she maintained.
