OAU Bans 6am, 7pm Lectures Following Students Protest

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has officially prohibited lecturers from scheduling classes as early as 6:00 a.m. or as late as 7:00 p.m.

This decision, aimed at improving student welfare, follows protests against irregular academic schedules.

The directive was outlined in a statement signed by K. A. Bakare, the university’s Registrar, late Friday.

It reminds academic staff that official lecture hours remain between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and warns against any violations, including conducting classes during Lecture Free Week.

The statement stressed the importance of adhering to these guidelines to maintain a balanced academic environment. It specifically noted that Lecture Free Week must be respected, with no lectures or continuous assessments scheduled during this period.

“The Vice-Chancellor would appreciate the understanding of both staff and students on these matters,” the statement read.

This move aligns with student concerns over scheduling issues that they argue negatively impact their academic performance and overall well-being.

Prior to the university’s decision, the Student’s Union had strongly criticized practices such as 7:00 a.m. classes, the disregard for Lecture Free Week, and lectures extending beyond 6:00 p.m., including those scheduled on Saturdays.

“It is imperative that we remind the school community that the above are illegal practices within OAU, and it’s disheartening to see these abnormalities become a norm,” the union stated.

Students argued that such disruptions create an unhealthy academic environment, affecting their ability to maintain a balance between their studies and other essential aspects of life.

“These abnormalities disrupt the balance between academics and other essential aspects of students’ lives. Scheduling lectures during Lecture Free Week undermines its intended purpose and robs students of the opportunity to consolidate their learning,” the statement continued.

The Student’s Union urged the university administration and the Division of Student Affairs to take immediate steps to enforce the regulations.

“We call on the university administration and the Division of Student Affairs to immediately address these concerns,” the union stated, warning that failure to act would lead to further action from the student body.

“The Great Ife Student’s Union remains steadfast in our advocacy for policies that prioritize the welfare and academic success of all students. Going forward, we will not hesitate to take decisive actions to protect the rights and interests of our members should normalcy not be restored.”

Additionally, students were encouraged to report any violations through their class representatives to ensure compliance.

By implementing this directive, OAU aims to create a more structured and student-friendly academic environment while addressing long-standing concerns over irregular lecture schedules.
