Ogun NDLEA Dismantles Hemp Farm, Arrests 4 Suspects

The Ogun State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recently achieved a significant breakthrough in its ongoing fight against illegal drug production and trafficking. In a move that underscores the agency's commitment to tackling drug-related issues head-on, NDLEA operatives destroyed a large six-hectare farm in Alaka village, Ogun State, which was used for the cultivation of cannabis sativa, commonly known as hemp. The operation is part of the agency's broader efforts to dismantle drug syndicates and curb the production of illicit substances.

At a press briefing held on Thursday in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, Mr. Tijani Rabe, the NDLEA state commandant, revealed that four individuals have been arrested in connection with the hemp farm and are currently under investigation. The agency’s actions highlight an unwavering determination to not only eradicate illegal drug farming but also bring to justice those involved in the production and distribution of such harmful substances.

Beyond this operation, the NDLEA Ogun Command has reported other significant successes in combating the drug trade. The agency made a series of high-profile arrests in 2024, seizing 9.7 tons of illicit drugs and 537.81 liters of liquid narcotics. One of the most notable operations was “Operation Closed Gates,” which led to the capture of an individual with 100 bags of hemp, weighing a total of 1.3 tons, in November. According to Rabe, this operation, launched as part of a special initiative during the holiday season, targeted drug merchants and syndicates, sealing off all major entry routes into the state. The operation was hailed as a success in disrupting the flow of illegal substances.

The NDLEA's proactive approach extends beyond enforcement actions. The agency has made significant strides in public awareness, conducting 128 sensitization programs across schools, workplaces, and local communities. These programs aim to educate the public about the dangers of drug abuse and to foster a culture of prevention. Rabe highlighted that over 27,600 individuals benefited from these awareness campaigns, which are seen as crucial in curbing future drug-related offenses by targeting younger generations and at-risk groups.

The NDLEA Ogun Command has also been successful in securing convictions, with 221 drug offenders sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. Many other cases remain in the judicial process, underscoring the agency’s commitment to ensuring that those caught in the web of illicit drug trade face appropriate legal consequences.

Rabe's update reflects the agency's relentless efforts to make Ogun State a no-go zone for drug dealers and to send a strong message that drug trafficking and abuse will not be tolerated. The 2024 scorecard serves as both a testament to the NDLEA's ongoing dedication and a reminder of the critical role law enforcement plays in safeguarding public health and safety.
