LG Polls: Imo APC Refunds Unsuccessful Aspirants

Ahead of the September 21, 2024 Local Government Council chairmanship and councillorship polls in Imo State,  the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced the refund of fees for the nomination and expression of interest forms to aspirants on the party's platform who failed to clinch the tickets.

The ruling party had pegged the fees for the nomination and expression of interest forms at Three Million Naira for Chairmanship ticket and One Million Naira for councillorship ticket.

The aspirants had purchased the forms believing that the party would conduct free, fair and credible primary elections.

They however got the shock of their lives when Governor Hope Uzodimma, announced at a stakeholders' meeting held at the party's state secretariat, Owerri, that candidates of the party would rather emerge through a consensus arrangement.

He enjoined leaders and stakeholders of the party in each of the 27 local government council areas of the state to go home and select the consensus candidates for the party.

The governor also announced that those who could not make it would be refunded the fees for the nomination and expression of interest forms.

Presenting cheques of Three and One Million Naira respectively to the affected aspirants at the party's state secretariat on Wednesday, 18th September, 2024, the state chairman of the party, Hon McDonald Ebere, described Senator Hope Uzodimma as a responsible man who keeps his promises.

He also commended the aspirants for their understanding just as he encouraged them to remain steadfast and loyal to the leadership of the party.

He noted that politics is not a do-or-die affair, pointing out that he "who fails to win today, may win tomorrow"

Reacting after receiving a cheque of Three Million Naira, Pastor Uche Nwole, a former House of Representatives member who served between 1999 and 2003 and one of the chairmanship aspirants in Mbaitoli Local Government A,rea thanked Governor Hope Uzodimma for keeping his promise.

He pledged on behalf other aspirants who also got their money refunded that they support the APC candidates in the local government council elections.

The recourse to consensus candidature created bad blood in the party as some aspirants felt shortchanged.

For instance, in Ohii/Amakohia-Ubi/Ndegwu Ward 9 in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state, a non-member of the party, Bartholomew Chinemere was reportedly selected as the consensus councillorship candidate because of his affinity with Hon Ebere to the discomfiture of aspirants who are members of the party.
