A tragic scene unfolded in Rivers State as a two-storey building under construction in the Egbelu Mgbaraja area of Ogbogoro Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, collapsed, claiming one life and leaving another individual critically injured. The disaster, which occurred around 2 p.m. on Monday, marks the second such collapse in the area within a week, sparking concerns over construction practices and safety measures in the region.
Eyewitnesses described the horrific event, which resulted in the death of a young man identified as Udeme, reportedly from Akwa Ibom State. Witness Jonathan Obey shared that workers had been on the second floor when the structure gave way, leading to the fatal incident. Another worker narrowly escaped death but sustained serious injuries and remains in critical condition. Obey attributed the collapse to the use of substandard materials, specifically noting the building's compromised foundation and inadequate structural supports. “When we arrived, it was clear that substandard materials had been used,” he stated. According to Obey, the foundation was not built to support a two-storey structure; weak reinforcement rods and insufficient cement were evident, and the decking lacked a central pillar and beam—factors that, in his view, directly led to the disaster.
The incident prompted an immediate visit from Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Evans Bipi, who expressed outrage over the developer’s actions. In a swift response, Bipi ordered the site to be sealed off and declared the developer wanted, condemning the project’s negligence and illegal status. “This site is sealed, and the developer is now wanted,” Bipi declared, vowing that those responsible for the avoidable loss of life would face severe consequences. He reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on unauthorized and unsafe construction practices, warning, “Anyone building without approval will face consequences. This is unacceptable, and we will use this case as an example.”
Commissioner Bipi extended condolences to the family of the deceased, confirming that Udeme’s remains would be preserved at a mortuary, with the location disclosed to his family for access. “This incident should serve as a warning to those who attempt to build without proper government approval,” he emphasized.
Adding his voice, Rivers State Commissioner for Special Duties, Samuel Anya, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, lambasting the developer’s decision to prioritize profit over human safety. “This is heartbreaking,” Anya said. “Not only was the building of poor quality, but it also lacked proper approval. Now, someone has paid the ultimate price with their life.” He asserted that the government would ensure that both the owner and engineer are held accountable, highlighting the administration’s commitment to protecting the safety and lives of its residents.
