Onitsha Resumes Full Commercial Activity, Defies Sit At Home

Traders in Onitsha metropolis, today, complied with Anambra State Government’s directive to open for business on Mondays.

Since August 9, 2021, major markets and business premises in the South East, Anambra State inclusive, were either shut or maintained skeletal services on Mondays following the every Monday Sit-At-Home order by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB.

Several attempts to end the exercise had failed despite the Leader of group, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu urging followers to disregard the continuous exercise.

However, last week, Governor Chukwuma Soludo visited various markets in Onitsha where he announced his government’s determination to end the anti-progressive exercise and to provide needed security for seamless trading activities to take place.

At some of the markets he visited earlier today, traders were seen selling their goods as customers were trooping in and out of the market in their numbers while some markets witnessed low turnout of customers and patronage.

The markets visited included; Electronic Dealers Market, Bridge Head; Coke Market, Okpoko; Relief Market, amongst others.

It was reported that a few of the traders like one Chiefs Izuchukwu Ifegbu and Sir Dona Obi, lauded praises of Governor Soludo, appreciating his massive love for traders.

A great ton of joy flood the hearts of various traders. Traders all around, thanked the governor of Anambra state, for keeping to his promises of protecting them, fulfilled promise which was shown by the provision of security agencies in the market to ensure hitch-free business activities and noted that traders came out as directed but there was low patronage in some parts of the market.

At Coke market Okpoko, there was a massive turnout of traders and their customers as people were trooping in to purchase different goods.

The said Onitsha main market, is the largest market in Africa based on geographical size and volume of goods. It is based in the city of Onitsha, in Onitsha North Local Government Area, the commercial capital of Anambra State in southeastern  Nigeria.

The town is located on the east bank of the Niger River that joined the Anambra River. The building that made up the main market Onitsha which was regarded as the largest in Nigeria was destroyed during the Nigeria civil war in 1968 and was rebuilt after the war.
