A former federal legislator, Rep. Sam Onuigbo has urged individuals attempting to sow discord between Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, to stop, emphasizing that such actions are detrimental to the state’s well-being.
Onuigbo, representing the South East on the North East Development Commission (NEDC) Board made this appeal during a press briefing in Umuahia on Thursday, August 2. The briefing occurred on the sidelines of the "Renewed Hope Police Agenda on Strengthening Community Policing: Building a Safer Nigeria Together" event. Onuigbo stressed that fostering unity and cooperation between state leaders is crucial for the progress and harmony of Abia State, and that divisive efforts only hinder collective efforts to address the state's challenges effectively.
He praised Governor Otti and Deputy Speaker Kalu for their collaborative efforts in advancing development in Abia State. He likened their partnership to being Abia best players, emphasizing that their positive working relationship should be encouraged and preserved. Onuigbo stressed that fostering this cooperation is crucial for Abia State's growth and progress, and that any attempts to disrupt their alliance are detrimental to the state's development.
The former lawmaker asserted that attempts to distort Rt. Hon. Kalu’s statement about Abians wanting to show appreciation to President Tinubu by electing an APC governor are meant to disrupt the positive relationship between Governor Otti and the Deputy Speaker. He cautioned that these actions, driven by jealousy and malice, are detrimental to the progress being achieved in the state through the collaboration of these two prominent Abia leaders. Onuigbo emphasized that such interference only serves to undermine the beneficial partnership that is crucial for the state’s development.
Onuigbo affirmed that no amount of malice or scheming will undermine the positive relationship between Governor Otti and Deputy Speaker Kalu. He highlighted that the Governor’s recognition of Kalu’s significant contributions was evident when Otti organized a grand civic reception in Kalu's honor in December 2023. During the event, Abia Traditional Rulers bestowed upon Kalu the esteemed chieftaincy title of "Enyi Abia," underscoring his remarkable achievements and the high regard in which he is held. Onuigbo emphasized that such gestures reflect the strong, respectful bond between the two leaders and reinforce their joint commitment to Abia State’s progress, countering any attempts to create discord.
He also noted that, on multiple occasions, including when Deputy Speaker Kalu led a delegation to thank Governor Otti for the grand civic reception in his honor, Kalu has praised Otti for his exemplary leadership. He emphasized that such recognition highlights Kalu’s appreciation for Otti's leadership qualities, which are crucial for Abia’s current needs. This ongoing acknowledgment underscores the strong and supportive relationship between the two leaders and their shared commitment to advancing the state’s progress.

He strongly urged the people of Abia to ignore the attempts of those spreading discord and negativity. Instead, he encouraged them to remain steadfast in their support for the two men who have consistently worked hard for the state's benefit. By maintaining their backing, Abians will help these individuals continue their efforts and secure further achievements and honors for the state. This collective support is crucial for sustaining progress and ensuring continued success on behalf of Abia.
