Otti Launches Model Court Hall Construction in 17 LGAs

The Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti has initiated the construction of model court halls in 17 local government areas of Abia in a move to enhance the judicial system and improve access to justice for residents.

While addressing the gathering in Umuene Autonomous Community, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, Otti characterized the construction of the model court halls as the realization of "a significant campaign promise.

Otti stated that in his tenure, the state's justice administration centers would be equipped with a functional appeal system, highlighting the judiciary's importance.

The governor reiterated his administration's dedication to creating a society where all individuals can access justice, regardless of their economic or social status.

He stated, ”We are committed to creating a fair system that provides justice to both the poor and the wealthy without prejudice.

”This project aligns with our vision of collaborating closely with the judiciary to establish efficient channels for the swift delivery of justice."

He also emphasized that the independence of the judiciary would be non-negotiable during his administration, as the State Government is committed to upholding "the letter and spirit of the law."

In her address, Chief Judge Justice Lilian Abai praised the current state administration for its initiatives to enhance the administration of justice in Abia, particularly through the construction of 17 prototype court halls across the 17 LGAs.

Abai noted that the construction of the court halls would not only boost productivity but also provide lawyers and litigants with a safe and comfortable environment to pursue justice.

In his speech, the state Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwannna, stated that the proposed model court building has been designed to meet the needs of stakeholders and address the current realities of the justice system.

Uwanna explained, “The facility will include a robing room for lawyers, a holding room for inmates from the correctional facility, as well as rooms for alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and pre-trial processes.

“We have taken time to ensure that the court hall would be powered by renewable energy with adequate provision for natural light and ventilation”, he added.

In his remarks, Justice Okey Nwamuo, President of the Customary Court of Appeal, hailed the project as a significant advancement.

He noted, “This is the first instance of the State Government constructing courts in the Local Government Areas. Previously, courts in the LGAs were either built by colonial authorities or by the host communities. This initiative by the government is truly commendable.”

Eze Nwaegoro, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Isiala-Ngwa Branch, praised the government for prioritizing the judiciary.

Nwaegoro emphasized the importance of a strong judicial system in promoting justice and safeguarding the rule of law.

He highlighted that the government's focus on enhancing judicial infrastructure, such as the construction of new court halls, reflects a commitment to improving access to justice for all citizens.
