A trending viral video showing a woman, who allegedly tore her husband's standard Nigerian passport into shreds at the Muritala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, upon their arrival to the country has taken a dramatic twist as the video has turned out to be a staged skit.
The footage, had parked widespread outrage which prompted an investigation into the matter by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS),
In a new video shared on the family's Instagram page, the husband appeared alongside his children, pleading for forgiveness and understanding from the public. He explained that the passport destruction was merely a reenactment of someone else's story, meant to entertain and not meant to be taken literally.
In the shared video the man, who said “the video was made to pass a lesson without the intention of it going viral”, begged everyone not to drag the situation to the mud.
Contrary to initial reports, the man insisted that his wife did not actually destroy his passport, and that the document remains intact. He apologized for any confusion or alarm caused by the viral video, assuring Nigerians that he and his family are law-abiding citizens who would never intentionally defy the country's laws.
Recall that the NIS had launched a formal investigation into the incident on Monday, August 12, 2024 , identifying the individual involved and inviting her for further questioning, emphasizing the possible penalties if found guilty.
“If the allegations are substantiated, her actions would have constituted a breach of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with corresponding penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security, and to preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments”, the Nigeria Immigration Service stated.
However, in light of the new revelation, it remains to be seen whether the probe will continue.
The incident serves as a cautionary tale about the power of social media and the importance of verifying information before sharing. As the man at the center of the storm pleaded for forgiveness, Nigerians are left to ponder the implications of a staged skit gone viral.
