Police Nab Former Delta Councillor Over Kidnap Plot

Delta State Police have arrested former Emu-Uno councillor, Ndubisi Okechhukwu, in connection with a failed kidnapping plot.

It was gathered that Okechhukwu, who served two terms representing Emu-Uno in Kwale Local Government Area, was detained after police thwarted an alleged plan to abduct a prominent community member.

The arrest was announced in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, on Sunday in Warri.

According to Edafe, the operation followed reliable intelligence received by Divisional Police Officer Florence Onum of the Abbi Division. The information indicated a plot to kidnap a notable figure in the Abbi community. "Acting on this intelligence, the DPO, Kwale, and operatives of the division embarked on a discreet investigation," stated Edafe.

The Statement said "On October 21, 2024, at approximately 1900hrs, Hon. Ndubisi Okechhukwu, a two-time councillor in Emu-Uno, Kwale, was arrested."

During questioning, Okechhukwu reportedly admitted to the crime, explaining that his motivation stemmed from frustration over his "suspension from being a councillor."

The statement further noted that Okechhukwu allegedly planned the kidnapping to pressure the local government into paying a ransom, given that the intended victim was known to have close ties with the local government chairman. Police have confirmed that Okechhukwu remains in custody as the investigation continues.

In a separate incident, police in Delta State, acting on intelligence about a suspected kidnapping ring, pursued the leader of a notorious gang identified as Philip Onoghosa.

"On October 25, 2024, around 1730hrs, members of the CP-Special Assignment Team tracked Onoghosa in Sapele. When Onoghosa noticed the officers at Amukpe Roundabout, he fled, abandoning a black Toyota Corolla with registration number SKL330AE. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded Baretta pistol with two rounds of ammunition. Police have launched a manhunt for the fugitive.

"Additionally, on October 22, 2024, Delta’s Safer Highway Patrol Team, conducting a stop-and-search operation along Mosogar Benin Road, attempted to flag down a black Toyota RAV4 SUV, registration number KUJ-311-MB.

"The driver evaded the checkpoint, but police gave chase, ultimately finding the vehicle abandoned nearby. Upon inspection, officers discovered vehicle particulars and keys linked to the owner, who confirmed that the car had been stolen from his residence in Kogi State. Inside the SUV, officers found two metal master keys and 14 different Toyota vehicle keys, sparking a new investigation."

Delta State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, expressed the command’s dedication to reducing crime across the state, especially as the “Ember months” approach, a period often associated with a spike in criminal activity. "Policemen have been deployed around the 25 local government areas and embarked on intensive visibility patrol," Abaniwonda affirmed, promising enhanced security for Delta State residents.
