Proposed Bayelsa Gas Turbines: Should we celebrate yet?

The issue of erratic power supply in Nigeria is a vast and pressing concern—one that could fill an entire book. Bayelsa State seems to stand out for having the most unreliable electricity supply of all the states .Surprisingly, public outcry over this persistent issue has been minimal.

Unlike in some other states where citizens take to the streets in protest, Bayelsans seem to have resigned themselves to the status quo. It was particularly striking that during the six months of total blackout in the State due to vandalism, there was little to no public reaction. One might be reminded of the biblical passage: "The people sat in great darkness" with little or no effort until light (power supply) shined.

To some extent, this silence could be attributed to the government's strong public relations efforts or perhaps an unwavering loyalty to the state administration. After all, as the saying goes, love is blind.

However, change may be on the horizon as the state government announced the planned installation of 60-megawatt (MW) gas turbines to enhance Bayelsa’s electricity supply. The approval was granted during the 151st State Executive Council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa.

The Commissioner for Information, Orientation, and Strategy, Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, alongside the Commissioner for Power, Engr. Kharin Komuko, addressed journalists on January 31, emphasizing that the initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure a stable power supply and prevent prolonged blackouts caused by vandalism.

According to Engr. Komuko, procurement arrangements for the gas turbines are already over 70% complete, and installation is expected to be finalized before the end of the year.

Governor Douye Diri, during the state’s 5th anniversary celebration, also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving Bayelsa’s chronic power issues, stating that the turbines are expected to arrive within two months.

This raises the question: Should we start preparing to celebrate? Skeptics argue that this announcement is merely political rhetoric, doubting whether the turbines will arrive as promised.

Meanwhile, loyal supporters of the governor remain optimistic, much like Peter in the scriptures, who vowed never to deny his faith. They firmly believe that light is finally at the end of the tunnel for Bayelsa’s Creek City.

Regardless of whether one is a skeptic or a believer, it is crucial for residents and stakeholders to prepare not only for the possibility of 24-hour electricity but also for the economic transformation it could bring. Beyond celebrating, the focus should shift to strategic planning—identifying developmental projects that could drive economic growth and prosperity in the state.

Reliable power supply is a fundamental pillar of any thriving economy. While industrial gas turbines require significant initial investment, they offer long-term benefits, including durability, low maintenance, and consistent power generation. Their fuel efficiency also reduces energy costs for businesses, making them an attractive solution for economic sustainability.

With this investment, both homes and businesses in Bayelsa can look forward to a more stable and competitive environment. Additionally, improved electricity supply has the potential to attract both local and foreign investors, further boosting the state’s economic prospects.

So, while we wait to see if the promises materialize, perhaps it’s time to start dusting off those dancing shoes—just in case.
