Pep Guardiola: Is the Magic Waning?

Josep Guardiola Sala, mainly known as Pep Guardiola, is a professional football manager and former player from Spain. As a player, he took his career to the zenith, winning laurels and appearing in the World Cup and as a manager, he has won virtually everything football has to offer.

In his playing days, Guardiola was a defensive midfielder. He usually played the playmaker's role. According to reports, Guardiola was a highly creative, hard-working, nimble, and elegant player, with good anticipation, tactical awareness, and an ability to read the game. He was usually deployed as either a central or defensive midfielder in front of his team's back-line, although he was also capable of playing in more attacking midfield roles.

He spent the majority of his career with Barcelona. He was an integral part of Johan Cruyff's Dream Team that won four successive Spanish league titles from 1991 to 1994, capping it with the club's first European Cup in 1992. He captained the team from 1997 to 2001, when he left the team. He also played with Brescia and Roma in Italy, Al-Ahli in Qatar and Dorados in Mexico. He had 47 caps with the Spanish national team. He was part of the Spanish 1994 FIFA World Cup team, as well as at UEFA Euro 2000.

Guardiola briefly managed Barcelona B team after retiring as a player and won a Tercera División title with team. He took charge of the first team in 2008. In his very first season with the team, he led Barcelona to the continental treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League. By this feat, Guardiola became the youngest manager to win the UEFA Champions League. This was the beginning of his illustrious title-winning career. He was named the FIFA World Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading the club to another La Liga and Champions League double in the 2010–11 season. Guardiola ended his four-year Barcelona stint in 2012 with 14 honours, which is a club record.

Maybe, as his way of savouring his accomplishments at Barcelona, Guardiola chose to rest for a year.

After a sabbatical, Guardiola pitched tent with Bayern Munich in 2013 and won the Bundesliga in each of the three seasons, including two domestic doubles.

His next Port of call was Manchester City, which he joined in 2016. Unlike in Barcelona and Bayern, his first season in charge of Manchester City was trophy-less but he bounced back and guided them to the Premier League title in his second season in charge, breaking numerous domestic records. For instance, the Citizens became the first team in the English Premiership to attain 100 points in a single season. He led City to a domestic treble -- the EFL Cup, the League title and the FA Cup -- in 2018–19, and their first Champions League title in 2022-23. They also achieved the treble that year.

Guardiola is the only manager to win the continental treble twice, and he holds the record for the most consecutive league games won in three different leagues, La Liga, the Bundesliga and the Premier League. He is considered to be one of the greatest managers of all time.

Guardiola has been doing wonderful things with his Manchester City team and his players. In the space of seven years, Guardiola has won 18 major trophies, including six Premier League titles. The fear of Manchester City is the beginning of wisdom in the Premier League. It is as if Guardiola and his boys are addicted to winning. The situation is such that even before the season starts, it is as if other clubs have surrendered the league title to them.

The 2024/25 season also started with the same expectation. But somehow things do not seem to be going as they used to. Things that have never happened before are now happening to Guardiola and his team. In fact it has been tales of the unexpected. On Wednesday, October 30, Manchester City lost 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur in a Carabao Cup match. This was followed by another 2-1 Premier league loss to Bournemouth. This defeat shattered their impressive consecutive 14 league wins against Bournemouth.

The loss to Bournemouth was followed, a few days later, by a 4-1 UEFA Champions League defeat to Sporting Lisbon. The loss halted Manchester City's record of 26 consecutive unbeaten matches in the Champions League! On November 9, Brighton also spanked Manchester City 2-1 in a league encounter before Tottenham (again) demolished the Cityzens 4-0 at their backyard. Liverpool completed the rout with a 2-0 defeat at Anfield. This is the first time in Guardiola's managerial career that he has lost six straight matches. The 0-4 loss also ended City's 52-match unbeaten record at Etihad Stadium. It is also City's worst home defeat since a 5-1 loss to Arsenal in 2003.

Guardiola cut a pitiable sight in the game against Liverpool. He looked like someone bereft of ideas, very much unlike the bubbling Guardiola we used to know. Where does he go from here? Is the Guardiola magic waning or is it the end of an era for the him and his boys? Only time will tell.

Reacting to Manchester City's poor run of results, Lakeside Tactician had this to say, "Pep and Man City are winless in six games including last Tuesday's Champions League home tie against Feyenoord. The series of poor results, no doubt, raise a big question. But I feel it's just the regular down time every winning team experience sometimes in a season. Pep might be searching for reasons to quit. He might be tired already as there is nothing more to play for.

"The team is intact and has the required quality to deliver the results. What is lacking is the mentality and the zeal to keep winning. Man City will bounce back and they may probably still challenge strongly for the title with just nine points separating them from the league leaders, Liverpool (as at 12.00 noon Saturday, December 7).

"Pep Guardiola has just been offered a contract extension which means he is not leaving. The team has just two first team injury worries, Rodri and Kovacic, so they will bounce back. They just need the twist to get back to winning ways and that's it".
