In a heartwarming display of community support, the Everlasting Arms Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Garki, Abuja, reached out to over 2,000 vulnerable residents on Sunday, distributing food, clothing, and shoes.
The annual initiative, called "Tabitha Tent," has been running since 2007 and is designed to assist the city's poorest, providing them with essentials that bring some relief during the festive season.
The event was a beacon of hope for many who struggle daily to make ends meet. Recipients, who ranged from the elderly to families, expressed deep gratitude for the generous gifts that helped alleviate some of their burdens.
Many of the beneficiaries called for increased government intervention to address the ongoing hardships faced by the nation's poorest citizens.
Mr. Gonet Jato, a father of three, shared his appreciation, highlighting that the donation would sustain his family for the next couple of weeks.
He also urged the government to recognize the suffering of the underprivileged and implement policies that can provide long-term relief, particularly in light of the current economic challenges.
Other beneficiaries, like Ms. Happiness Jacob, echoed similar sentiments, praying for the church’s continued generosity. She pointed out that while donations like those from the RCCG are deeply appreciated, they can only go so far in addressing widespread poverty.
“People are suffering. Many are dying of hunger,” she said while also, imploring both the church and the government to do more.”
Pastor Everistus Azodo, the parish leader, addressed the gathering by stressing the importance of community solidarity, acknowledging the severe lack of government social safety nets that leave many Nigerians vulnerable.
He called on affluent Nigerians to join the effort, encouraging them to support initiatives like Tabitha Tent, which provide immediate relief to the most disadvantaged.
The church also offers a skills training program to help vulnerable people become self-sufficient. One of the program’s coordinators, Mrs. Modupe Ogundimu, emphasized the importance of these initiatives in empowering individuals, allowing them to eventually support themselves and their families.
As the holiday season unfolds, the Tabitha Tent initiative continues to serve as a reminder that collective action, driven by compassion, can make a significant impact on alleviating the suffering of the poor.
