The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Ministry of Education to initiate a pilot program to test the use of local languages as a medium of instruction in selected schools across Nigeria. This resolution was passed during plenary following a motion titled "Promoting Local Languages as Medium of Instruction in Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in Nigeria."
The motion was presented by Hon. Kalejaiye Paul, who represents Ajeromi/Ifelodun Federal Constituency, Lagos State. In his presentation, Hon. Paul highlighted Nigeria's extraordinary linguistic diversity and cultural richness. He argued that utilizing local languages in teaching could enhance learning outcomes, especially for young learners.
“Teaching in one’s mother tongue often leads to stronger teacher-student connections as it creates a conducive learning environment and positive classroom dynamics,” Hon. Paul said during his submission.
He further noted that several studies have shown that children learn more effectively when taught in a language they understand. According to him, implementing this approach could foster greater educational inclusivity, preserve indigenous languages, and enhance national development.
The motion was adopted without debate, reflecting broad consensus among lawmakers. The House directed its Committee on Basic Education and Services, alongside the Committee on Legislative Compliance, to work with the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure implementation. The committees are expected to report back to the House within four weeks.
In another legislative development, the House passed for second reading a Bill for an Act to repeal the Ministry of Finance Incorporated Act (2004) and enact a new Ministry of Finance Incorporated Act. The bill, sponsored by Hon. Ademorin Kuye, representing Somolu Federal Constituency, Lagos State, seeks to modernize the legal framework governing the ministry’s operations.
Hon. Kuye explained that the proposed legislation is aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated in managing Nigeria's public assets. He stated that the current law is outdated and does not reflect contemporary realities in financial management.
The House continues to deliberate on policies and reforms aimed at addressing challenges in the educational and financial sectors to ensure sustainable development.
