Senate Calls For Security Reinforcement In Borno LGAs

The Nigerian Senate has called for the urgent deployment of security personnel to secure Abadam and Marte Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Borno State.

This resolution was passed during Thursday’s plenary session after a motion titled “Urgent Need to Deploy Adequate Security Personnel to Endangered Local Government Areas in Borno State” was moved by Senator Monguno Tahir, representing Borno North.

In his motion, Senator Monguno emphasized the dire security situation in the affected LGAs, describing them as "hotspots for insurgency that demand immediate intervention." He added, "The safety of our people is non-negotiable, and we must ensure that adequate security measures are in place."

The Senate subsequently directed its Committees on Army and Air Force to ensure the effective implementation of the resolution.

Adding his voice to the debate, Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, called for special military operations modeled after those employed by neighboring Chad. “Chad has achieved remarkable success in combating terrorism through specialized operations. Nigeria must adopt similar strategies to protect our citizens,” Ndume argued.

Senator Ned Nwoko of Delta North supported the motion, emphasizing the need for dialogue and collaboration. “We cannot rely solely on military action. We must engage disgruntled groups in dialogue and address the root causes of insecurity. At the same time, our military must be adequately empowered,” he stated.

From Kogi West, Senator Sunday Karimi underscored the importance of local leadership in aiding security operations. “The leaders in these LGAs must work closely with security personnel. They know the terrain and can guide them effectively. Without this cooperation, progress will be slow,” he explained.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies for their efforts so far, but stressed the need for regional collaboration. “The fight against insurgency is not one nation’s battle alone. We must strengthen our partnerships with neighboring countries to ensure lasting peace,” Jibrin said.

The Senate’s resolution underscores its commitment to tackling insecurity, particularly in areas severely affected by insurgency.

The Committees on Army and Air Force are expected to provide updates on the implementation of this directive. Senator Monguno concluded, “This is a call to action. The people of Abadam and Marte are counting on us.”
