Resident Doctors Suspend Nationwide Warning Strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its seven-day nationwide warning strike and directed its members to resume work.

The association embarked on a seven-day strike over the abduction of Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna.

Popoola was abducted on December 27, 2023, alongside her husband and nephew at the senior staff quarters of the eye centre.

It was learnt that while her husband was released in March after discussions with the abductors, Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity. The association in July issued a two-week ultimatum to the government over Popoola’s abduction.

NARD president, Dele Abdullahi, who spoke with Newsmen, responded positively after discussions with the government.

“It was a seven-day warning strike so we have suspended it yesterday. The engagement with the federal government is currently going well and they have agreed to a line of actions,” he said.

“We will be meeting to review the progress the government has made in the next three weeks.”

Also, the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) expressed solidarity with the resident doctors during their strike.

During the Seven-Day warning strike, The union denounced Popoola’s abduction and called on the federal government and state authorities to mobilise security agencies to secure her release.

The Union also urged President Bola Tinubu to implement advanced security methods to fight the rising threats of kidnapping, banditry, and organised crimes in Nigeria.

Earlier in August, The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu chapter also staged a protest demanding the release of their colleague and member Ganiyat Popoola who was abducted late December last year in Kaduna State.

The doctors on Monday, 19, August, 2024 in a peaceful demonstration around the hospital premises also demanded for the release of the 20 medical students of the University of Jos and Maiduguri who were abducted last Thursday along Otukpa-Otukpo-Enugu Road, Benue State before their release.

Led by President Olusola Monehin, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) staged a protest at the hospital, demanding the safe and unconditional release of Dr. Popoola and her nephew, abducted over seven months ago.

The Federal Government on 29 August, appealed to the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to suspend their seven-day warning strike, urging the members to return to work and resume their critical healthcare services as discussions were ongoing to ensure the safety of their kidnapped colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola.
