Patrik Schick’s dazzling hat-trick propelled Bayer Leverkusen to a 5-2 win against Heidenheim, ending a frustrating three-match winless streak in the Bundesliga. The result also stretched Heidenheim's miserable run to six consecutive games without a victory, a club record.
Following the international break, Leverkusen were under pressure to close the gap to Bayern Munich and continue their pursuit of the Bundesliga title. The fixture against a struggling Heidenheim side seemed like the perfect opportunity to bounce back, but things quickly took an unexpected turn.
The match started disastrously for the hosts, with Heidenheim taking a surprise two-goal lead by the 21st minute. The opening goal came after Leverkusen’s throw-in was intercepted by Marvin Pieringer, who set up Niklas Dorsch to score, ending a 57-match wait for a league goal.
The BayArena was left stunned moments later when Mathias Honsak took advantage of slack defending, slipping between Granit Xhaka and Jonathan Tah before calmly finishing past Lukas Hradecky to double the lead.
However, Xabi Alonso’s side responded with remarkable resilience, quickly finding their rhythm to level the score by halftime. Exequiel Palacios played a pivotal role, first scoring from a Granit Xhaka pass and then setting up Schick, who chipped the ball delicately over the goalkeeper to make it 2-2.
The halftime break came as a reprieve for Heidenheim, who needed to regroup after losing control of the match. But just seven minutes after the restart, Leverkusen took the lead. Florian Wirtz, who had been lively throughout, danced past his marker and squared the ball for Schick, who finished with aplomb to give the hosts their first lead of the match.
Despite their vulnerabilities this season, where they’ve dropped points from winning positions, Leverkusen looked assured in this contest. Schick sealed his hat-trick in the 71st minute with a header from an Arthur cross, further putting Heidenheim to the sword.
The game was wrapped up in the final moments when Xhaka fired in a powerful shot from distance, confirming the 5-2 scoreline. The victory kept Leverkusen firmly in the top four, nine points behind Bayern Munich, while Heidenheim remains perilously close to the relegation zone, now just two points clear.
With this dominant performance, Leverkusen demonstrated the strength and resilience needed to stay in the title race, while Heidenheim’s search for form continues to elude them.
