Rivers CP Commends Protesters for Peaceful Conduct

The Rivers State Police Command says it would not condone protesters blocking roads in the state as the End Bad Governance and Hunger protest enters day three.

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olatunji Disu said this while addressing protesters at the Pleasure Park along Aba Road Port Harcourt.

He commended the protesters for their peaceful coordination and deposition.

Olatunji Disu, however, told the protesters that police would not allow them to block roads and cause panic in the state, asking them to use the sides of the roads.

He said: “So far so good, I am saying thank you. If you think we are going to come here and have a confrontation with you, you have failed. If that is what is on your mind, then it will not happen.

“But at the same time, I want us to know that we don’t want you to block the road. We will stay here with you. Our job is to protect you. Anywhere you want to go we will go with you.

“I thank you so much. May the Almighty God continue to be our guide. You guys have been so wonderful to us, whether you like it or not. You guys know you're right and you stand by it.

“You have been assisting the police. I have worked almost everywhere in this country, but the level of cooperation I get from you, I have not gotten anywhere.”

It was observed on Friday that major roads and streets were deserted as the usual traffic in some parts of the state capital was absence.

Our correspondent also observed that most banks didn't open for the day while others who opened performed skeletal functions but also closed before the usual closing time.

It was equally noticed that most shops and other trading outfits were also closed with the owners expressing fear of a possible loot by some hoodlums who may take advantage of the protest as seen in other states.

On Thursday, Governor Siminalayi Fubara had asked the protesters to return home, promising to convey their grievances to President Bola Tinubu.

Fubara, while addressing the protesters in front of the Government House Port Harcourt, said he was aware of their pains and his government is working hard to alleviate it, insisting that better days are ahead.

He advised the protesters not to allow themselves to be used by elements of destabilization to cause mayhem in the state, saying their protest should remain peaceful and orderly.
