Rivers Government Donates AW139 Helicopter to Air Force

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has officially handed over an AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). The helicopter, previously owned by the Rivers State Government, is expected to boost aerial surveillance, emergency response, and oil revenue security operations in the Niger Delta region.

The handover ceremony took place at the 115 Special Operations Group of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Rumuomasi, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on Wednesday. Governor Fubara stated that this action is part of his administration's commitment to safeguarding national assets and supporting efforts to improve Nigeria's economic and security sectors.

The governor emphasized that the helicopter's handover is not just a political gesture but a practical commitment to national security. “This is a sincere commitment to support the operations and success of Nigeria," Fubara said. He further clarified that no exchange or compensation was requested in return for the donation. Instead, the state's primary request is that the helicopter be effectively utilized to safeguard lives, national assets, and key operations within Rivers State and the Niger Delta.

As a member of the committee tasked with protecting critical national assets, particularly oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta, Governor Fubara explained that the helicopter’s donation is aimed at ensuring optimal performance in aerial security operations. He also acknowledged that increased crude oil production is essential to improving the economic wellbeing of Nigeria, with Rivers State playing a pivotal role.

“We are obligated to provide the necessary support, whether it is for the Air Force, the Army, the Navy, or the police. This helicopter will enhance national security operations, boost oil production, and help secure vital national assets,” he added.

The helicopter, which had been out of operation for several years, was previously contracted to Aero Contractors for commercial use. However, due to disputes between the company and the former administration over revenue remittances, the helicopter had been grounded. Governor Fubara mentioned that after receiving a formal request from the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, to donate the helicopter for security purposes, the Rivers State Executive Council approved the handover.

Governor Fubara highlighted the broader implications of the helicopter’s deployment for national economic development. By supporting the Nigerian Air Force’s efforts to secure the Niger Delta region, the state is contributing to the Federal Government's goal of increasing oil production and securing revenue streams to address development challenges across the country.

The governor lauded President Bola Tinubu's administration for its policies aimed at improving national security and addressing economic issues. "We are proud to contribute to these efforts by donating this critical asset for the common good of Nigeria," he said.

Governor Fubara also took the opportunity to commend the Nigerian Air Force for its commitment to the security and welfare of the nation, pledging continued support from the Rivers State Government. This support, he explained, extends beyond the helicopter donation to include ongoing projects such as resurfacing the runway at the Air Force Base and providing housing facilities for military personnel.

In his remarks, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar expressed deep gratitude to the Rivers State Government for the generous donation, describing it as a symbol of the collaboration needed to address Nigeria's evolving security challenges. He noted that the AW139 helicopter will greatly enhance the Air Force’s capacity for tactical airlifts, search and rescue operations, and disaster relief efforts.

"The addition of this aircraft to our fleet will significantly improve our operational capabilities. With its advanced avionics and versatility, this platform will allow us to respond more effectively to national security threats and humanitarian needs," said Abubakar.

The Chief of the Air Staff also highlighted the importance of proper training and maintenance to ensure the helicopter's sustained operational effectiveness. "We have already initiated comprehensive training programs for our pilots, engineers, and technicians to maximize the utility of this asset," he stated, emphasizing the Air Force's commitment to operational excellence.

Air Vice Marshal E.O.E. Ebiowei, the Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command, echoed Abubakar’s sentiments, noting that the helicopter donation strengthens the ongoing partnership between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian Air Force. He acknowledged the state's ongoing contributions, including the provision of accommodation and enhanced air operation capabilities at the Port Harcourt Base.

"We will continue to work closely with our strategic partners to ensure the safety and security of Nigeria’s assets and people," Ebiowei said. "This donation reflects our shared responsibility and commitment to national security."

The official handover ceremony concluded with the signing of the relevant documents. Dr. Tammy Danagogo, Secretary to the State Government, signed on behalf of Rivers State, while Air Commodore Haliru Badamasi signed on behalf of the Nigerian Air Force. The document was passed from the Chief of Aircraft Engineering to the Chief of Training and Operations, and finally to the Chief of the Air Staff.
