RIVERS LG POLL: Protesters Storm RSIEC office As Election Tension Escalates

On Friday, a wave of passionate protesters stormed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office, chanting "Election must hold!" as they defied heavy rain to rally for their democratic rights. With makeshift canopies set up and drums echoing in the downpour, the demonstrators partially blocked nearby roads, showcasing their determination to see the local government elections proceed as scheduled.

The protest came on the heels of a dramatic confrontation between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State Police Command. Earlier in the day, Fubara had visited the RSIEC to address alarming reports of police attempts to seize control of the premises ahead of the crucial October 5 elections. In a fiery speech, he declared, “Keep your security, I do not need it. It happened in Anambra State. This election must hold on Saturday. The result will be declared, and the winners will be sworn in.”

The governor's strong stance underscores the high stakes surrounding the upcoming elections. Tensions escalated earlier when security operatives foiled an audacious attempt by men in police uniforms to breach the RSIEC office. Reports indicated that these intruders sought to scale the gates and access the commission’s strong room, allegedly aiming to steal sensitive electoral materials. An anonymous source at the scene revealed that vigilant security personnel alerted RSIEC leadership and government officials, prompting immediate action that informed the governor of the unfolding crisis.

Compounding the chaos, the Nigeria Police Force issued a directive to its commanders to enforce a recent Federal High Court ruling prohibiting police involvement in the local elections. According to Grace Iringe-Koko, the Public Relations Officer for the Rivers State Police Command, this directive is rooted in a restraining order issued on July 19, 2024, which the police are obligated to adhere to. This was reinforced by a subsequent ruling on September 30, 2024, further prohibiting any police engagement in the electoral process.

As the clock ticks down to the elections, the atmosphere in Rivers State is charged with uncertainty. The protests reflect a deep-seated desire among citizens for their voices to be heard and for the electoral process to unfold without obstruction. With the governor asserting that the elections will go ahead, despite police orders, the situation remains tense.

The outcome of this showdown could have significant implications for governance and democratic integrity in Rivers State. As both sides prepare for the impending election, the question remains: will the will of the people prevail, or will external forces disrupt their right to choose? As Friday's events unfold, all eyes are on Rivers State, where the battle for democracy is h eating up.
