Tension in Abia Over Ambush, Killing of Soldiers

Communities in Abia State are gripped by fear of potential reprisal attacks from soldiers following the recent ambush that led to the killing of two military personnel.

The attack, which took place at a checkpoint on the border between Abia and Imo States, has left residents in the affected areas, particularly around Umuopara and Ikenobizi, worried about possible military retaliation.

The violence has heightened tensions in the region, with many locals fearing that the military might target their communities in revenge for the deaths of their comrades. These fears are compounded by the uncertainty of who exactly carried out the attack, as the assailants have not been identified, and there are concerns that innocent civilians could bear the brunt of any military reprisals.

Ebele Chukwu, a community leader in Dikeukwu, noted that many residents are still displaced and reluctant to return home, as they worry about their safety. Some locals have even expressed concern that the military could mistakenly hold their entire community responsible for the attack, despite knowing that the assailants were not from the area.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has condemned the ambush and assured the public that his administration is working closely with security agencies to investigate the incident. However, the ongoing fear of reprisals persists, with many residents calling for the military to exercise restraint and avoid escalating the violence further.

As the security situation remains volatile, local leaders and community members continue to call for dialogue and efforts to prevent further violence, hoping to restore peace and stability to the region without resorting to further bloodshed.

Despite a visit from the state Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, last Friday, to assess the situation, residents remain apprehensive, fearing that the unrest may continue.

A statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, mentioned that the Commissioner and his team conducted a patrol at the attacked military checkpoint in Umuokpara, where they met Lt. Imran Adamu Musa and his unit.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has strongly condemned the recent attack on the motorcade of fellow House member, Ginger Onwusibe, in Abia State. The attack, which occurred on Sunday night in Ubakala, Umuahia South Local Council, resulted in the tragic death of one of Onwusibe’s security aides. Unidentified gunmen ambushed the convoy, sparking outrage and fear within the region.

In his statement, Kalu expressed deep concern over the violent act, emphasizing the need for swift justice for the victim and accountability for those responsible. He condemned the attack as an assault not only on Onwusibe but also on the democratic process and the safety of elected representatives.

Kalu called for an immediate investigation into the incident to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

While Onwusibe, who represents Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency, was fortunately not in the vehicle during the attack, the death of his security aide has raised alarms about the increasing violence in the state. Kalu urged both the security forces and local authorities to heighten efforts to safeguard political figures and ensure the safety of citizens.

The Deputy Speaker’s condemnation of the attack underscores the seriousness with which the government views the escalating violence in the state. He called for unity among political leaders and the public in combating the growing insecurity, stressing that violence against anyone, particularly public figures, undermines the peace and progress of the region.

The growing insecurity in Abia State has intensified tensions between the Labour Party-led state government and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, accused the opposition of being responsible for the increasing insecurity since May.

In turn, PDP publicity secretary Eric Ikwuagwu rejected the accusation, urging the government to avoid politicizing the issue of security. He emphasized that the opposition's role is to provide constructive criticism and alternative viewpoints without fear of intimidation.
