WAEC Meets to Address Mass Malpractices in 2024 Examinations

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination stated that the Nigeria Examinations Committee meeting has begun.

The 78th conference is scheduled to address the critical issue of misconduct and irregularities identified in the 2024 WASSCE for school applicants.

In a Monday statement released on X, the West African Examinations Council emphasized the significance of this conference and urged stakeholders to stay informed.

“The 78th Meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) begins today to consider & decide on the malpractice/irregularity cases arising from the conduct of WASSCE for School Candidates, 2024,” it read.

This crucial meeting and its findings according to the examination body, are expected to have far-reaching consequences for students and the Nigerian educational environment as a whole.

WAEC has also advised concerned applicants and the public to remain tuned for updates on the results.

The statement read, “The West African Examinations Council is pleased to inform candidates who sat WASSCE for school candidates, 2024 that the result has officially been released today, Monday, August 12, 2024.”

Meanwhile, Niger Delta Connect reported  that The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) withdrew the results of 215,267 candidates from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

WAEC Head of Nigeria Office Dr Amos Dangut , disclosed on Monday, 12 August 2024  that the results were not released to students due to different records of cases of examination malpractice.

Dangut, while announcing the official release of the 2024 results said the withheld number of results represents 11.92 per cent of the 1,805,216 candidates who participated in the West African the examination.

The numbers were 4.37 per cent lower than the 16.29 per cent recorded in the previous 2023 WASSCE written by WAEC Candidates.

Dangut emphasized that the Council will continue to discipline all examples of test malpractice, stating that schools, supervisors, teachers, and candidates who engaged in such tactics were damaging the educational system.

He said, “The increasing use of mobile phones in the examination hall, despite the existing ban, and organised cheating in some schools, are other nagging issues.’’

The WAEC head noted that every form of offences recorded are under investigations, adding that conclusions of investigations would be made available to the right body in the council for deliberations and final verdicts.

He added, The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their various schools in due course.

Candidates affected by these decisions can now seek redress for their malpractice cases via our website if they so wish. All hands must, therefore, be on deck to sanitise the system.
