The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withdrawn the results of 215,267 candidates from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
WAEC Head of Nigeria Office Dr Amos Dangut , revealed this recent development, on Monday, 12 August 2024 while explaining that the results were not released to students due to different records of cases of examination malpractice.
Dangut, while announcing the official release of the 2024 results said the withheld number of results represents 11.92 per cent of the 1,805,216 candidates who participated in the West African the examination.
The numbers were 4.37 per cent lower than the 16.29 per cent recorded in the previous 2023 WASSCE written by WAEC Candidates.
Dangut emphasized that the Council will continue to discipline all examples of test malpractice, stating that schools, supervisors, teachers, and candidates who engaged in such tactics were damaging the educational system.
He said, “The increasing use of mobilee phones in the examination hall, despite the existing ban, and organised cheating in some schools, are other nagging issues.’’

The WAEC head noted that every form of offences recorded are under investigations, adding that conclusions of investigations would be made available to the right body in the council for deliberations and final verdicts.
He added, The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their various schools in due course. Candidates affected by these decisions can now seek redress for their malpractice cases via our website if they so wish. All hands must, therefore, be on deck to sanitise the system.
Dangut also revealed that 73.79 per cent of applicants got credit or above in a minimum of any five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics. This number shows 1,332,089 applicants out of the total 1,805,216 who sat the examination.
While admonishing candidates to check their results as they are already being uploaded on the WAEC Websites, He stressed on the need for them to apply for their digital certificates which is to be released 48 hours after application.
He added, “Candidates who have fulfilled their financial obligations to the Council can access their results on the Council’s results website within the next 12 hours. Copies of the Result Listing will be sent to schools shortly.”
