Wrestling Federation Mourns The Passing Of Adekunle Ojo

The wrestling community in Nigeria has been thrown into shock and profound sadness following the untimely demise of one of Nigeria's brightest wrestlers, Amos Ojo.

While expressing its condolences to the immediate family of the deceased, the Ogun State Government and everyone connected to the late Ojo, the Nigerian Wrestling Federation (NWF) says it received the news of his demise with "shock and sadness".

In a condolence message signed by its Media Officer, Promise Okotoko and dated Friday, February 21, 2025, the NWF President, Dr Daniel Igali, expressed the Federation's sympathy to the Amos Adekunle Ojo family, the Ogun State Government and everyone connected to him, particularly the wrestling family in Ogun State, urging them to be strong in their grief due to the sad occurrence.

"We at the Wrestling Federation sincerely extend our heart-felt condolences to the Amos Adekunle Ojo family, friends, colleagues, and the entire sports family in Ogun State at this moment of grief."

The statement further stated that

"He was a reverend figure whose unique character and achievements contributed to the growth of the sport we see today. People like him gave their all to wrestling in Nigeria when everything was dark."

"We pray that the good Lord strengthens his family, and everyone connected to him to bear this irreplaceable loss"

The late Amos Ojo, who competed in the 48kg class, was a member of the Nigerian wrestling team for over a decade, where he became multiple Commonwealth games gold medalist, multiple African games gold medalist among others.

The late wrestler attended two Olympic Games -- Seoul in 1988 and the Barcelona 1992 Olympics.

The late, bespectacled Ojo was a professional in the true sense of the word. He did his job as a sports man without complaining. He was a committed and dedicated wrestler in his hey days who gave his all to the sport he loved so much.

The diminutive wrestler was never shy to take on opponents far taller than himself and most often than not, he came out unscathed.

Amos Ojo, who is from Ogun State, was born on July 20, 1962 and died on Monday, February 17, 2025, at the age of 63.
