Abia Bank Customers Excited Over CBN Sanctions  on Commercial Banks

Bank customers in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, have expressed their approval of the recent sanctions imposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on nine Deposit Money Banks.


They described the penalties as appropriate and justified, given the circumstances.


The CBN had announced on Tuesday that it had fined nine banks a sum of N150 million each for failing to ensure adequate cash availability in their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) during the holiday period. This failure left many customers unable to access their funds, leading to widespread frustration.


Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, the CBN's Acting Director of Corporate Communications, stated that the nine banks failed to adhere to the apex bank’s cash distribution guidelines.


Speaking to our correspondent on Wednesday, as well as during live phone-in radio programs, the customers voiced their concerns and praised the CBN for taking action against the banks. They emphasized the need for stronger measures to safeguard depositors' interests and prevent further exploitation, particularly during peak periods such as the Christmas season.


Many customers in Umuahia have now called for the CBN to intensify its regulatory measures and hold banks more accountable for such failures. They highlighted the critical role ATMs play in providing accessible banking services, especially during busy times when customers rely on them the most.


The sanction has sparked celebration among many bank customers in the state, who shared their frustrating experiences during the Christmas season due to the unavailability of cash.


One customer expressed, "It’s about time the CBN took action. The banks should not be allowed to treat customers poorly, especially when it’s a time when people need cash the most. The banks should be more responsible in ensuring that their ATMs are stocked and operational."


Veteran journalist, Chika Nwabueze, transporter Kelechi Nnamdi, and trader Amaka Chiemela have called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to continue its vital role in safeguarding depositors and ensuring economic stability. They emphasized the importance of the CBN’s intervention in maintaining a secure banking environment, particularly in the face of challenges faced by customers.


According to them, the CBN’s efforts are crucial for fostering trust in the banking system and promoting overall economic growth. They urged the CBN to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing issues that could harm consumers and the broader economy.


Others urged the CBN to ensure that these fines serve as a deterrent to other banks, encouraging them to uphold the trust and expectations of their customers. Some went further, suggesting that the CBN consider more stringent penalties for repeated offenses.


They voiced concerns that several banks in Umuahia and Aba reportedly dispensed between N5,000 and N10,000 over the counter but still failed to load cash into their ATMs. This situation, they said, forced them to turn to Point of Sale (PoS) agents, who charged excessively high rates.


Overall, the consensus among the customers is that while the sanctions are a step in the right direction, more can and should be done to protect the interests of banking customers in the country. They are hopeful that this development will lead to improved services and better accountability within the banking sector, particularly in ensuring the availability of cash during critical periods.
