Abia Govt detains Engineer, Manager For Road Damage.

In an effort to protect government properties, the Abia State government has detained an engineer and a manager of a well-known cooking gas company situated on the newly built Ossah Road in Umuahia for damaging the road pavement.

During a press briefing following this week’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti, Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu highlighted that the government will no longer accept the intentional destruction of property intended for public use.

Kanu emphasized that it is unacceptable for the government to invest billions in essential infrastructure while individuals engage in vandalism. He called for greater accountability and respect for public resources, highlighting the need for community responsibility in protecting these vital assets that benefit everyone.

"it is unacceptable for the government to invest billions of Naira in essential infrastructure for the public's comfort while unscrupulous individuals engage in vandalism", he emphasized

He called for collective action to protect these valuable assets. The commissioner also stated that, fostering a sense of shared responsibility, everyone can contribute to protecting the infrastructure that benefits the public and ensures a better environment for all.

"The state government urges communities, traditional leaders, and youth to take responsibility for government properties in their areas" He added.

He expressed regret that such actions undermine the government’s efforts to transform Umuahia and Aba into smart cities. He explained that the destruction of state properties undermines the government’s commitment to maintaining infrastructure and ensuring accountability.

In May of this year, Ossah Road, now called Aguiyi Ironsi Road was inaugurated following eight months of reconstruction. Otti had mentioned that the 3.5 km six-lane dual carriageway is an important step in transforming Abia State into a modern and functional commercial and industrial hub.
