The Abia State Government and the labor unions in the state have finalized an agreement to implement the new national minimum wage of N70,000, along with necessary adjustments.
This agreement follows a strike notice issued by the labor unions to the Abia State government, set for November 2, 2024.
During the signing event, Governor Alex Otti expressed his hope that this action would encourage workers to enhance their productivity within the state’s public service.
Governor Otti, represented by his Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba, stated that the Abia State government has been a leader in advocating for improved welfare for its workers.
“We want to confirm that the new minimum wage will take effect this October,” Otti said. “This means that employees at the lowest tier, specifically Grade Level One Step One, will receive a minimum salary of N70,000.
“Rest assured that those payments will be made before the end of the month as promised by the state Governor.”
He also expressed his gratitude to the members of Organized Labour for their maturity throughout the negotiation process, calling the agreement a “win-win” for both sides.
In response, Ogbonnaya Okoro, the leader of the Organized Labour team and state Chairman of the NLC, remarked that the signing of the agreement represents a significant milestone in the implementation of the new minimum wage.
