Abia to Implement New Minimum Wage Starting in October

The Abia State Government has announced that it will start paying the new minimum wage in October.

The State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, revealed this on Monday during a press briefing following the week’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu stated that the payment will be applicable to all categories of workers, ensuring that everyone will benefit from the new minimum wage.

The Commissioner announced that the state government is set to commence the construction of 17 court halls, one in each of the 17 local government areas.

He noted that this initiative aims to enhance the administration of justice within the state, making legal services more accessible to citizens.

He also stated that through the establishment of these court halls, the government intends to improve the efficiency of the judicial process, reduce congestion in existing facilities, and provide a more conducive environment for legal proceedings.

He further announced that the State Ministry of Health will conduct a free medical outreach next week at Ugwunnagbo.

He mentioned that the outreach will provide free consultations, as well as maternal and child healthcare services, ensuring that essential medical support is accessible to the community.

In addition, diagnostic tests will be offered at no cost, promoting early detection and treatment of health issues. He said the government is committed to improving healthcare access and addressing the needs of residents.

To support Abia athletes, he mentioned that the governor has finalized plans to host para-Olympic champions, especially Miss Onyinyechi Mark, who won gold in the 61 kg category, and Miss Esther Nworgu, who secured silver in the 41 kg class.

Recall that, the Abia State Governor Alex Otti had assured workers that his administration will be among the first to implement the new national minimum wage.

He stated his commitment will reflect the government’s dedication to improving the welfare of its employees and ensuring fair compensation. Otti's statement comes as part of broader efforts to enhance economic conditions in the state.

“We are, however, conscious of our promise and as soon as a headway is made, Abia will be amongst the first to pay whatever becomes the new national minimum wage. The patience, understanding and sacrifices of the workers are very much appreciated, and shall never be taken for granted”, he said
