Court Clears Biafran Activists of All Charges

The Abia State High Court in Umuahia has discharged and acquitted five (5) Biafran activists who had been held in detention since their arrest on July 20, 2022.

The individuals, who were previously detained, faced accusations related to their involvement in pro-Biafra activities. After a thorough legal process, the court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to convict them.

The judgment, delivered on Thursday by Hon. Justice A.O. Chijioke, brought an end to the prolonged legal struggle for the detainees, marking a significant resolution in their case.

The ruling came after the prosecution presented three witnesses, whose testimonies were effectively discredited by the defense team’s thorough legal strategy.

Human rights lawyer and legal counsel for Biafran agitators, Ifeanyi-Okite Ejiofor, Esq., has commended the Abia State High Court in Umuahia for delivering what he called a monumental ruling.

Ejiofor voiced his satisfaction with the court’s ruling, emphasizing that the accused, who had been charged with conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms, and membership in an unlawful society under Charge No: HU/61C/2022, were fully exonerated of all charges.

He hailed the decision as a significant victory for justice and the rights of those advocating for Biafran independence.

He also praised the acquittal as a powerful testament to the dedication, professionalism, and integrity of his legal team, which included Dennison Agu, Esq., and Chinwe Umeche, Esq., the Head of Chambers. He commended the team’s precision and commitment, noting that their efforts have rekindled hope for justice for those wrongfully accused.

He remarked, “This case reinforces the universal principle that true freedom relies on the rule of law and a judicial system that ensures the rights of some are not protected by infringing on the rights of others.”

Ejiofor stressed that the victory not only safeguarded his clients’ rights but also upheld core values of justice and human rights advocacy.

“This is an extraordinary victory and a beacon of hope for justice and fairness in the ongoing fight for the freedom of innocent detainees,” Ejiofor concluded, expressing his deep satisfaction with the ruling.

He assured the public that his team remains steadfast in its commitment to securing the release of innocent Biafrans detained across Nigeria.

He urged Biafrans to continue their peaceful and lawful pursuit of self-determination, emphasizing the importance of maintaining order and adhering to the constitution in their efforts.
