The Delta State Government has reassured it's commitment to continually look out for the wellbeing of it's citizens, even as water level rises and threatens those residing in coastal communities.
This assurance is coming from the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Festus Ahon, today, Saturday the 19th of October 2024, while delivering a speech on the flood situation in the state, in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
The press secretary also called on those living in flood-prone locations to quickly relocate to higher grounds as the government was already making adequate plans to accommodate them at the camps situated close to them.
Ahon said that, the governor Sheriff Francis Oborevwori , remains committed to ensuring that all state residents were protected and catered for in line with the administration’s agenda.
In his words he said: "As soon as we got the warning on the impending flood, our hardworking Governor Sheriff Oborevwori set up a high-powered flood management Committee headed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu"
“The Committee went straight to work and we have been alerting residents living in such flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds.
“In the interim, we are setting up camps in Asaba, Kwale, Patani, Ozoro and Otu-Jeremi for the people to move in.
“The Flood Management Committee, in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency, has been going around coastal communities to enlighten the people that the flood is coming and that they should move to the camps nearest to them.
He further stated that, as a responsible Government the Oborevwori’s administration is ever committed to ensuring the safety of every Deltan and it's residents, stressing that special plans have been put in place for school children to be taught in the camps.
“As a responsible government, the Oborevwori’s administration is ever committed to ensuring the safety of lives of all residents across the state.
“As a Committee, we have made arrangements for mattresses, feeding, electricity, water, and medical supplies for the IDPs, and we urge them to relocate to the camps nearest to them.
“Aside from the above provisions, we have also made arrangements for school children to be taught in the camps” he said.
