The Enugu State Government has declared an outbreak of cholera in the state, urging residents to take preventive measures to curb its spread.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Emmanuel Obi, in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Mainstream Media to Governor Peter Mbah, Mr. Dan Nwomeh, on Monday in Enugu.
Dr. Obi revealed that the cholera outbreak, which has been reported nationwide, has also reached Enugu. He explained that the disease is primarily spread through contaminated food and water, causing acute watery diarrhea, which can be fatal if not treated promptly.
"Other symptoms may include vomiting and abdominal cramps," he added.
The commissioner assured the public that the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with its partners, had initiated measures to contain the outbreak in line with the guidelines provided by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
"We urge the public to remain vigilant and observe preventive measures, including practicing good hand hygiene by washing hands regularly with soap and clean running water or using hand sanitizers," Obi advised.
He also emphasized the importance of using potable water from reliable sources, maintaining safe food handling practices, and wearing gloves and face masks when caring for the sick.
"Anyone experiencing sudden cases of watery diarrhea should report to the nearest healthcare facility immediately," the commissioner stated.
Dr. Obi reaffirmed the state government's commitment to ensuring the health and safety of its citizens, stressing the importance of community cooperation in addressing the outbreak.
