Gov. Otti Approves Hospital, Diagnostic Centre Upgrades


Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the upgrade of Amachara General Hospital and the Abia Diagnostic Centre to provide world-class healthcare services.

The state Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, made the announcement on Monday, following the Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Otti.

The upgrades aim to significantly improve healthcare quality in the state. Additionally, the council approved the upgrade of essential water facilities to combat open defecation, involving the construction of modern facilities across Abia's three zones. The state government will also reconstruct the 41.4 km stretch of Ohafia-Arochukwu Road.

According to Commissioner Kanu, Governor Otti is committed to improving road infrastructure to support farmers and enhance transportation.

"In furtherance to the ongoing reforms in the health sector of the state,His Excellency Dr Alex Otti OFR had granted approval for the upgrade and retrofitting of the Amachara General Hospital to offer the highest of specialist hospital and health care services.

"Approval has also been granted for the upgrade of the Diagnostic center to offer all cadres of Diagnostic and surgery services." He noted.

 The State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, detailed the upgrades, which will focus on expanding services in internal medicine, nephrology, cardiology, surgical disciplines, obstetrics, gynecology, and eye health to provide comprehensive and advanced medical care to residents.

He revealed that the state government has approved funds for the recruitment of high-caliber specialists across various medical fields to ensure that Abia people receive the best in terms of quality healthcare services.

"He (Governor) had also approved funds for hiring high calibre specialists in various fields of medicine.

"In the succeeding days and weeks, some of these retrofitting and upgrade of services will become manifest." Prof. Uche stated

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities,Mr Ikechukwu Monday, disclosed that the state has also embarked on Abia Integrated Water Sanitation and Hygiene Accelerated Programme initiatives to address water supply issues, which are critical to public health.

According to him, the initiative conceived as a coordinated, three-phase program will see existing boreholes retrofitted with solar-powered systems, particularly in rural areas, to ensure consistent water supply without reliance on the power grid.

The state government has approved the recruitment of high-caliber specialists to improve healthcare quality.

The upgrades will involve both infrastructure enhancements and service improvements, including modernizing facilities and expanding medical services. The goal is to ensure top-tier care, addressing a wide array of health needs and significantly advancing the overall standard of healthcare in the state.
