Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of one of Nigeria’s foremost nationalists and elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, who died at the age of 97. Governor Fubara, in a heartfelt statement, extended his condolences to the Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo, Delta State, describing the loss as a significant blow not only to the family but to the entire nation.
The death of Chief Clark, made public by Prof. C.C. Clark on behalf of the family, was met with widespread mourning. Governor Fubara emphasized the profound impact the late Chief had on the country, noting his relentless dedication to national unity, his advocacy for the Niger Delta, and his role as a moral compass for government leaders.
“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our father and leader, Chief Edwin Clark. Despite his advanced age, he remained actively involved in national matters, serving as a beacon of hope and a voice of reason for leaders in Nigeria. His wisdom, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice will be sorely missed,” Fubara said.
The governor reflected on Chief Clark's lifelong dedication to advocating for the rights of minorities, particularly the Niger Delta people. He praised Clark’s leadership as both a courageous Ijaw leader and a nationalist who fought for the betterment of Nigeria. Governor Fubara highlighted his significant contributions to the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), where he championed the rights of the Niger Delta region, and his involvement in the Middle Belt Leaders Forum (MBLF), where he worked to foster unity among Nigeria's diverse ethnic groups.
"Chief Edwin Clark’s legacy is etched in history as a defender of the marginalized and a relentless advocate for the unity of Nigeria. He was a freedom fighter who courageously stood for what was right, regardless of the challenges," Fubara remarked. "His role in PANDEF and MBLF showcased his passion for equitable governance and justice for all Nigerians. His voice was a guiding light for many in positions of leadership."
As Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenges of leadership and national unity, Governor Fubara stressed the importance of drawing inspiration from the late elder statesman's life and principles. He called on leaders across the country to honor Chief Clark’s memory by continuing to uphold the values of justice, fairness, and unity that he tirelessly championed.
