Results declared by INEC has indicated the figures that reveals how Governor Godwin Obaseki lost majority of votes in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, where hails from. According to the results uploaded on INEC iREV, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate has been declared the winner in Oredo leaving the Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and Labour Party behind.
According to the result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC polled a total of 30,780 votes in the LGA, while Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured 24,938 votes. Olumide Akpata of Labour Party garnered 5,389 votes.
Aso, his Deputy, Godwins Omobayo, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku and Dennis Idahosa, the All Progressives Congress, APC, Deputy governorship candidate have all lost their various local governments at the Saturday’s election in the state.
Idahosa who is the incumbent lawmaker representing the Ovia Federal constituency in the National Assembly lost the election to PDP. The federal constituency comprises Ovia North East and Ovia South West local governments respectively. In the results, INEC declared the PDP winner of Ovia North East LGA with 15,311 votes, and APC trailing with 13,225 votes.
In Ovia South West, the PDP garnered 10,260 votes to defeat APC with 10,150 votes. Also, the embattled Deputy Governor of the state, Godwins Omobayo lost his local government, Akoko-Edo to APC. The PDP got 15,865 votes as against APC 34,847 votes. The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, was also defeated by APC with 12, 277 votes, as against his party, the PDP which polled 11,284 votes. Out of the 17 local government results so far declared, APC won in 11 while the PDP held onto six.
Niger Delta Connect had earlier reported that while collation of results by INEC was still ongoing, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced it’s results for Saturday's governorship election in Edo State, amidst allegations of irregularities and tampering. The people of Edo made their choice at the poll on Saturday, September 21, 2024, to elect a candidate who will succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki, whose tenure expires on November 12, 2024. However, the residents are tensed as the final outcome is unknown.
The election has been very contentious with the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) being the major contenders. PDP has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Benin, of colluding with the APC to rig the process. The PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo had earlier raised concerns about results from over 20 polling units being tampered with, while reports emerged of PDP agents being denied access to collation centers as at the time of filling this report.
Addressing the press on Sunday, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Chairman of the Edo PDP National Campaign Council, claimed the party had collated results from 12 out of 18 local government areas before the process was disrupted.
