Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, has sworn in newly elected chairmen and vice chairmen of the 21 local government areas, urging them to focus on transparency, unity, and impactful governance. The high-profile swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday at the Government House in Lokoja, according to a statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismaila Isah.
Governor Ododo did not mince words in his charge to the new local government executives. He called on them to prioritize projects and programs that directly uplift the lives of citizens at the grassroots. Stressing the importance of their new roles, the governor highlighted that local governments are the closest tier of government to the people, making them essential for sustainable development.
“There is a need for you to be transparent and accountable in managing the affairs of your local government,” Ododo declared. “Your election is an opportunity to justify local government autonomy by addressing issues that have a direct positive impact on the people you represent.”
The governor also urged the new chairmen to foster inclusivity by involving all stakeholders in the decision-making process. He advised them to ensure that their administration reflects the needs and aspirations of the people, not just in words but through visible actions.
“Local government administration must not only be seen but felt by the people,” Ododo emphasized. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to bringing governance closer to the people and maintaining the pace of development throughout the state.
Speaking on behalf of the new chairmen, Tosin Olokun, Chairman of Yagba West Local Government Area, expressed their commitment to complementing the state government’s efforts. He promised that the council leaders would embark on life-changing projects and ensure that their leadership transcends political divisions.
“We are committed to uniting our people irrespective of political differences,” Olokun assured. “Our focus will align with the state government’s development agenda to transform lives and foster progress.”
