LP CRISIS: Abure rejects Caretaker Committee

The Labour Party's internal strife has intensified, with the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee emphatically disavowing Nenadi Usman's appointment as caretaker chairman, sparking fears of further turmoil and factional in-fighting.

Despite a previous Court of Appeal judgment affirming Abure as national chairman, the Labour Party National Convention constituted a caretaker committee, sparking controversy.

On Wednesday, the party nominated Nenadi Usman, a former Minister of Finance, to chair its 29-member National Caretaker Committee during the LP stakeholders meeting held at the Banquet Hall of the Abia Government House in Umuahia, the state capital.

In attendance were Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the party in 2023, Datti Baba-Ahmed, his running mate, among others.

Julius Abure and Callistus Okafor, factional chairmen of the party, had rejected the call for a stakeholders meeting of the party, declaring it as illegal.

Speaking at the expanded stakeholders’ meeting, the Party’s Presidential Candidate in 2023 said the move was to salvage the party, adding that LP can move from being the third force to becoming the biggest party in Nigeria if things are done the right way.

“We are not here to suspend or sack anybody, our mission is to solidify the party and do the right thing. We are hoping to be on the right part of reconciliation, we have resolved that we will move forward, we went for a large member committee that can reach every part of Nigeria. LP is the only party that is offering something different in Nigeria and we should not joke with it. The members are carefully selected across NLC, geo-political zones, elected political office holders to ensure that everything is done accordingly”.

In his remarks, Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, restated that the caretaker committee is not aimed at sacking the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee but expressed worries that INEC has not recognized his leadership.

“A few weeks ago INEC invited all Chairmen of political parties and Abure was not invited, I also have it on good authority that we do not have party agents for the election in Edo. So I consulted my leaders that we cannot wait till things get worst, we consulted widely and the best option is for us as owners of the party to decide the way forward. I had engaged the leadership of NWC to find a way out but to no avail, we are not dissolving anybody but if with time, your leadership has become ineffectual, then you are gone.”

Reacting, the Abure-led faction rejected the caretaker committee, insisting that Abure remains the legitimate national chairman.

A statement signed by the national publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, described Nenadi Usman’s appointment as “illegal and unconstitutional”.

“The premise on which Governor Alex Otti called the meeting is not only faulty but mischievous.

Government business is not transacted verbally but through official communication and correspondences which are done in writing. As we speak, there is no communication whatsoever from INEC to the party as regards any objection to the conduct of the National Convention.

We challenge Alex Otti to produce the official letter addressed to him from INEC on the subject matter. There is no vacuum in the leadership of the Party. Consequently, the so-called caretaker committee set up by the Governor of Abia State is not known to the constitution of the party and can best be described as a department in Abia State Government House.

We are shocked to note that the so-called chairman of the caretaker committee is not a registered member of the party. She surfaced during the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign to assist Peter Obi in his campaign,’ he stated.
